Mission Impossible: Fallout sets franchise box office record with $61.5million opening weekend.


Coming on the heels of stellar reviews and great word of mouth, Mission Impossible: Fallout dominated at the weekend box office. 


That domination resulted in Tom Cruise and company settting a new record for the franchise's Friday to Sunday opening by raking-in $61.5million in North America, according to Entertainment Weekly. The action-thriller also posted huge numbers overseas, earning another $92million to bring the total global take to $153.5million.


Mission Impossible II had held the best opening weekend for the franchise with $57.8million back in 2000. It went on to gross  $215.4 million in North America and $546.3 million worldwide. Rogue Nation, which was released in 2015, had a solid $55.5million U.S. launch and wound up with $195million domestically and $682.7million worldwide.


Fallout has the benefit of hitting theaters as the best-reviewed of the six movies with a stellar 98 percent ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also marks the first time a Mission Impossible movie has ever received an 'A' CinemaScore from moviegoers.Tom Cruise scored another victory at the box office with Fallout. 

The film opened in theaters Thursday night and made $6million, which is a new record for the 56-year-old superstar. 'Tom Cruise has proven time and time again that when it comes to action, he is one of the most dependable stars out there,' Paramount domestic distribution chief Kyle Davies told The Hollywood Reporter. 

'We've had all these big visual-effect driven summer movies. Now comes along a movie where the actor and director are putting it all on the line with real stunts. It provides raw and visceral entertainment that people are excited about.' This latest film in the franchise sees Ethan Hunt and the IMF team race join forces with CIA assassin August Walker to prevent a disaster of epic proportions. Mission: 

Impossible - Fallout's stellar cast includes: Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin, Wes Bentley and Frederick Schmidt.
