A New York woman charged with lying about being raped by two college football players now says she never told investigators she was sexually assaulted.
Nikki Yovino, of South Setauket, New York, was in a Connecticut court Wednesday for a hearing which is part of her ongoing trial.
In 2017, she was charged with lying about her claim that two former Sacred Heart University football players sexually assaulted her in the bathroom of a party in October 2016.
She said that she only made the claim to win sympathy from a love interest.
Now, she is facing up to five years imprisonment for second-degree falsely reporting an incident and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
At Wednesday's hearing, she stunned prosecutors by claiming that she never told police she was assaulted.
Assistant State’s Attorney Emily Trudeau asked the now 19-year-old: 'You never told law enforcement you were sexually assaulted?'
She replied: 'No. I never said I was sexually assaulted.'
Trudeau shot back: 'Well then why were they investigating a sexual assault?'
To that, she shrugged and said: 'I don't know.'
Police said that in 2016, she told them after the incident that 'something happened in the bathroom that I did not want to happen.
In their reports, they said she told the two men: '
'I don’t want to be in here, I don’t want to do anything. My friends are waiting for me outside, let me go outside.'
It remains unclear who called 911.
Earlier this year, Yovino rejected a plea deal which would have seen her go away for two years.
She and her lawyer have been trying to get the case dropped ever since.
The men, neither of whom has ever been named, told police that while they had sex with the women, it was consensual.
Their story was corroborated by others at the party who said they saw her go into the bathroom willingly with them
