A Chihuahua mix rescued after being covered with gasoline and set on fire by her owner has died.
Dean Sherfield Finley, 39, of Tucson, Arizona, is accused of dousing her Chihuahua mix, Lovely, with gasoline and then intentionally setting both the room they were in and the dog on fire during an incident that occurred May 7.
Although one of Finley's family members was able to put out Lovely's flames, the dog still suffered burns and was transported to a local animal hospital, according to a Pima County news release.
Lovely was taken to the Pima Animal Care Center for specialized treatment on May 8, where she received around-the-clock care.
The shelter said Lovely had a 50/50 chance of surviving the injuries she sustained when she was set on fire.
AZ Central reported that Lovely had not been showing signs of recovery and was not interested in eating or walking.
On May 18, the animal shelter took to Facebook to say that that within a 24 hour period, people had donated more than $11,670 to put towards Lovely's treatment and she was already en route to Prescott.
However, just two days later, on Sunday, the Pima Animal Care Center posted a Facebook update revealing that their 'hearts are breaking' because Lovely died after going into cardiac arrest that morning.
'We are only comforted by the fact that she died knowing she was loved, not just by all of us but by the thousands of people who sent in donations, messages of love and support and who were rooting for our sweet girl,' the message read.
'There are no words to describe how we all feel today or how humbled and grateful we are to our community who showed an unbelievable amount of love and care for this little dog.'
Finley was arrested on felony charges of Arson of an Occupied Structure, Criminal Damage and Animal Cruelty.
