A man was arrested early Friday after exchanging gunfire with officers, shouting about President Donald Trump and draping a flag over the counter in the lobby of the Trump National Doral Golf Club near Miami that's owned by Trump, police said.
Police were notified of an 'active shooter' armed with a handgun about 1:30am, Doral Police Chief Hernan Organvidez told news reporters at a pre-dawn press conference.
The shooter, who has not been identified, allegedly pulled a fire alarm to lure emergency responders into the golf course's lobby.
Officers from Doral and Miami-Dade confronted the gunman immediately, exchanging gunfire with the man who was 'neutralized' and taken into custody.
Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said the man was 'spewing some information' about Trump, and 'actively shooting'. The whole incident lasted 'less than a couple of minutes'.
What exactly he was saying has not been released.
Investigators also do not believe he was a guest at the resort.
'He had an American flag that he did drape over the counter,' Perez said. 'That all was part of the investigation. We're going to take it from there and see what his real motives are and how far we get into that point, and then we'll have that discussion with the FBI to see how far this goes.'
'We are not saying that this is terrorism, we’re not saying any of that, but we’re not discounting anything at this point,' Perez added.
The gunman left the scene on a gurney, to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities at Kendall Regional Medical Center. He was last reported in stable condition.
A Doral officer sustained a broken wrist in the confrontation, and was last reported in good condition at Baptist Hospital.
