University of Minnesota football players won't face charges in sexual assault investigation even though prosecutors say their behavior was 'deplorable'.
Ten suspended Minnesota football players will not face charges in connection with an alleged sexual assault near campus, prosecutors announced Friday after taking a second look at the case.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman had previously declined to charge the players in connection with the September incident that triggered suspensions, possible expulsions, talk of a bowl game boycott and questions of whether head coach Tracy Claeys should continue with the Gopher football program.
But the school's own investigation unearthed the troubling details of the female victim's sexual assault by 10 to 20 men on the team after their season-opening victory.
After reviewing that report, Freeman stood by his November decision, saying the school's investigation didn't add sufficient evidence to warrant criminal charges.

Boy, 13, to have his leg amputated after teacher 'BODY-SLAMMED him to the floor three times on his first day of school, then sent him home without medical attention or telling his mom'.
A teenage boy from Columbus, Georgia, will have his right leg amputated today after a teacher allegedly body-slammed him to the floor three times, causing nerve damage.
Montravious Thomas, 13, was attending Edgewood Student Services Center on September 12 when Bryant Mosley 'had to physically restrain a student... due to behavioral issues,' a Columbus Police Department report said.
But an attorney representing Thomas and his mother says Mosley repeatedly threw the boy to the ground then sent him home without medical attention or telling his mom, The Ledger-Enquirer reported.
Thomas was attending the AIM program, which hosts children who have been temporarily removed from their regular schools due to disruptive behavior, when the incident happened.
It was his first day at the program, according to WTVM.
According to Renee Tucker, who represents Thomas and his mom Lawanda, the boy was trying to leave class to call his mom when Mosley, a behavioral specialist, stopped him.
Mosley then threw him to the floor for an 'unknown reason,' Tucker said, and did it again when the boy tried to leave again.
Tucker also claims that Eddie Powell, the assistant principal, saw the violence at one point, an that a school resource officer saw Thomas limping away but didn't help or file a report.
The attorney also says that the school talked about calling for an ambulance, but then decided against it, and that Mosley then put the boy on a bus home without calling his family.
'Doctors talked to him and his mother on Sunday and told him they were having to take his leg since they were unable to improve the flow of blood to his lower leg.
The family will be pursuing a lawsuit, Tucker said, and that early filing notices put the figure at $5million.

It was not until he began reeling on the floor in pain that he was taken to the emergency room.
Doctors performed an abdomen and pelvic scan that revealed a build up of air, fluid and food inside his body.
Eventually he was wheeled into the operated room where surgeons discovered a 2.5cm tear in the left side of his throat.
According to the Journal of Emergency Medicine, the man was given a tube to aid his breathing for 14 days as he recovered.
He then spent another nine days in hospital before he was eventually discharged - with a feeding tube in place.
Writing in the Journal, medics said: 'This case serves as an important reminder of a potentially life- threatening surgical emergency initially interpreted as discomfort after a large spicy meal.'
Few people survive a tear in the esophagus, a medical complication known as Boerhaave syndrome.
It was first reported in 1724 by a Dutch doctor called Herman Boerhaave.
With very few typical symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose before it is too late.
After a while, sufferers commonly develop potentially fatal shocks or sepsis.
However, around a third of cases happen under unusual circumstances.
It is not clear how the ghost pepper prompted the man's esophagus to rupture - whether it was the inflammation, the retching, something else, or a combination of factors.
Ghost peppers have a Scoville rating of more than one million.
To put that in perspective: a sweet bell pepper has 0, Tabasco has 100, and Jalapeno has 2,500.
Samsung refuses to use outside labs to test its batteries: Claims self-testing could not have led to battery crisis.
Smartphone manufacturers selling their products through major US carriers all put their batteries to the test at external labs approved by the CTIA – that is, except for Samsung.
In the midst of the firm’s massive recall of the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, which is set to cost at least $5.3 billion and has been called an ‘environmental disaster,’ it has been revealed that Samsung tests its products at an in-house lab.
Though the facility is certified by the CTIA, the move makes Samsung the only such manufacturer that does not use an independent battery testing site, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
A Samsung Note 7 handset is positioned for testing in the lab (left), then later catches fire after pressure is applied to its fully charged battery (right). The testers later claimed that the same would happen to 'any phone' under these conditions.
Smartphone manufacturers selling in the US all go through one of 28 labs certified by the US wireless industry’s trade group, the CTIA, according to the report.
Other tech giants, including Apple, use third-party CTIA labs.
On Friday, Samsung said it will be making ‘significant changes’ in its quality assurance process to improve the safety of its devices.
The firm, however, did not elaborate on how this would be done.
When manufacturers test their own products rather than going through a third party, they often run the risk creating conflicts of interests, Eddie Forouzan, of the IEEE committee that developed the battery standard, tells WSJ.
Doing this, however, can help to protect company secrets and even get the product out faster.
